HIGHWAY WATCH® AND UNIGROUP, INC. TEAM UP FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY AND SECURITY |

ST. LOUIS - Nearly 200 employees at UniGroup, Inc., the parent company of United Van Lines, Mayflower Transit, and other transportation-related companies, were recently certified as members of Highway Watch®. Highway Watch is a national safety and security program that utilizes the skills, experience, and "road smarts" of America's transportation workers to help prevent terrorists from using large vehicles or hazardous cargoes as weapons and to protect America's critical highway transportation infrastructure. The program is administered by American Trucking Association (ATA) under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
UniGroup has committed to putting Highway Watch training materials into the hands of their drivers and encouraging voluntary participation in the national program. In addition to its drivers, UniGroup will offer the training to all of its headquarters employees. The curriculum teaches drivers and others in the transportation industry how to observe and properly report suspected national security threats and highway safety incidents.
"We have an important duty to take a leadership position in helping provide security on America's highways while still promoting safety as we always have," said Dave Bengston, director of safety for UniGroup. "Our employees are proud to be able to do their part in keeping our country safe from the threat of terror." Highway Watch, formerly a joint project of ATA and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, began operation in May 1998. Highway Watch has a 24-hour national calling center to handle an increasing volume of calls from highway professionals. Also, state Amber Alert missing children programs are coordinated with Highway Watch.
UniGroup, Inc. is one of the nation's largest privately owned transportation companies. Its world headquarters offices are located in Fenton, Mo.
