On March 18, the Syracuse (N.Y.) St. Patrick’s Day Parade and United Van Lines agent Delaney Moving & Storage teamed up to combat hunger in their local community. Created in remembrance of “An Gorta Mor” (The Great Hunger) in Ireland 150 years ago, the Saint Patrick Hunger Project was a collaborative effort to raise spring food supplies for the Syracuse Community Network of Hunger Related Agencies.

Delaney Moving & Storage volunteered its services to help load and transport the food collected from the parade route to a central warehouse where it will soon be distributed to more than 70 food pantries throughout Syracuse by the Inter-Religious Food Consortium. In total, 11,250 pounds of non perishable canned and dry goods filling 45 barrels were donated by the Syracuse community for the St. Patrick Hunger Project.

“When we learned of the Saint Patrick Hunger Project, we immediately wanted to be involved,” said Juleen Delaney, owner, Delaney Moving & Storage. “The project was a wonderful opportunity for us to donate our services to a cause and community for which we care deeply.”

Organizers asked all parade-goers and participating organizations to bring non-perishable canned food items to the parade in support of the Saint Patrick Hunger Project. In addition to the parade-route barrels, collection areas were set up in area schools at the beginning of March. Monetary donations were also accepted for the hunger-relief organizations.

“It was a great day for the people of Syracuse and we are extremely grateful for the support of Delaney Moving & Storage,” said Bill Gooley, Syracuse St. Patrick’s Parade Committee. “This was the Saint Patrick Hunger Project’s first year but I look forward to making it an annual tradition.”
