SEEKONK, Mass. – When Conlon Moving & Storage’s van operator Jeffrey Oliveira heard that Ronald McDonald House Charities was looking for volunteers and donations for their walk-a-thon in Providence, R.I., he knew his agency would be proud to assist. Conlon Moving & Storage, Seekonk, Mass., an agent for United Van Lines, has a 125-year tradition of being active in the community and donating time and supplies to various community efforts.

This event was no different. Oliveira worked with his childhood friend Rhonda McMichael, Family Room Coordinator at Ronald McDonald House, to see what needed to be done and to make it happen.

“It felt great to do a good deed for the kids,” Oliveira said. “Somebody always needs somebody, and helping other people, especially kids, is what makes this world go around.”

Oliveira delivered supplies donated by Conlon to different sites in preparation for the event, assisted with set-up in the early morning hours on the day of the walk-a-thon, and then helped Ronald McDonald House staff ensure everything went smoothly during the walk.

In addition to donating more than 400 bottles of water, Conlon donated a truck for the event, and management volunteered their time. George St. Pierre, vice president, and Dave Thompson, operations manager, handed out water to walkers during the entire event.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities is a wonderful organization,” Thompson said. “We’re committed to the community, and we truly believe a company’s involvement in its community is paramount to its success.”

The Ronald McDonald House in Providence houses the families of children being treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

“This was my first time helping with the walk-a-thon, but I will do it again,” Oliveira said. “If they need me next year, I’ll be there.”
