DECATUR, Texas – Quick thinking by a United Van Lines driver prevented a head-on collision and saved the life of a fellow motorist on Hwy 380 between Decatur and Denton, Texas on March 2.
Motorist Kirby Griffin was getting ready to make a right turn off of a two-lane highway when Dan Rispoli, a driver for United agent Hilldrup Moving and Storage, Stafford, Va., moved slightly towards the shoulder and repeatedly showed his break lights as a warning that there was trouble ahead. Griffin heeded the warning and fell behind the United Van Lines truck. Moments later a tractor trailer passed the two drivers on the right shoulder, going the wrong way at 70 mph.
“Had it not been for this driver’s alert and skillful driving, I would in fact be dead,” Griffin said.
Rispoli is based out of Hilldrup’s location in Stafford, Va. He has been driving for United Van Lines for more than 30 years and has earned a reputation for being a dedicated van operator who puts his best foot forward every day.
“I was just doing my job, and I’m glad that no one got hurt,” Rispoli said. “I don’t think that I did anything that any of the other drivers at Hilldrup wouldn’t have done. We have a lot of world-class drivers.”
United Van Lines has made safety its top priority and prides itself on employing the industry’s best drivers.
“Dan Rispoli’s quick and decisive action prevented a tragedy,” said United’s Senior Executive Vice President Steve Dawkins. “We thank him for doing his part to keep highways safe for everyone on the road and upholding the safety standards of United.”
