Americans Move to Seattle, Dallas and Portland This Summer

Sep 12, 2017 – New United Van Lines study shows Americans continue to leave Northeastern cities for West, Pacific Northwest On the heels of a busy residential moving season, United Van Lines today announced the findings of its Summer Movers Study, which indicated that Seattle, Dallas and Portland are the most popular moving destinations. To capture the city-to-city migration patterns in the U.S., United analyzed domestic moves during peak moving season, May 1 to Aug. 31. During this time, 40 percent of all domestic household goods moves take place. Based on United’s summer moving volume data, the most popular metro areas for U.S. families to move to this peak season were:
  1. Seattle, Washington
  2. Dallas, Texas
  3. Portland, Oregon
  4. Denver, Colorado
  5. San Francisco, California
  6. Atlanta, Georgia
  7. Austin, Texas
  8. Las Vegas, Nevada
  9. Charlotte, North Carolina
  10. Orlando, Florida
The data also revealed the top metro areas families moved from this peak moving season:
  1. Chicago, Illinois
  2. New York, New York
  3. Nassau-Suffolk, New York
  4. Boston, Massachusetts
  5. Norfolk, Virginia
  6. San Bernardino, California
  7. Bergen-Passaic, New Jersey
  8. Newark, New Jersey
  9. Washington, D.C.
  10. San Diego, California
Many cities that are experiencing growth – more people moving into the metropolitan region than out – are located in the West and Pacific Northwest. The Southern region also saw considerable growth, including high volumes of moves to cities such as Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte. The cities that are experiencing the largest moving deficits – more people moving out than in – are Chicago and cities located in in the Northeast, including New York and Boston. “Every year, the summer months continue to be the most popular time to move,” said Melissa Sullivan, director, marketing communications for United Van Lines. “Throughout the entire year, United conducts more moves than any other moving company. This puts us in a unique position to use our data to observe migration trends from across the country – city-to-city and state-to-state.” As the nation’s largest household goods mover, United Van Lines collects and maintains data regarding its moves. Since 1977, United has released an annual domestic movers study in January, tracking migration patterns on a state-by-state basis. This summer’s movers study offers unique insight into the current city-to-city moving patterns. The findings for the full year 2017 will be released in January 2018.
